Thomas B. Wheatley

Background

Born in Puebla, Mexico in 1948 of American parents, Thomas (or Tom) grew up in Dothan, Alabama, before leaving for Davidson College in North Carolina and Columbia Law School in New York City. His skills were honed at Ropes & Gray in Boston and as Litigation Department Chair at Perkins, Thompson in Portland, Maine, before moving Downeast to Fenton, Chapman, Wheatley & Kane in Bar Harbor, and now to his new firm, Wheatley Legal, PC, in Ellsworth. A Christian, he has attended Methodist, Episcopal, and Baptist churches.

Thomas has three grown children, a daughter in Virginia, a son, also a lawyer, in Boston, and a daughter in Maryland, as well as three granddaughters, two in Boston and one in Virginia. He reconnected a few years ago with a High School friend from Alabama, Cindy, who moved to Maine to marry him.

While attending Columbia Law School, Thomas Wheatley was an editor of the prestigious Columbia Law Review and worked as a summer associate at a leading Wall Street firm, Cravath, Swaine & Moore. Following graduation from Columbia, Mr. Wheatley worked for more than 5 years in the Litigation Department of one of the world's best law firms, Ropes & Gray, in Boston.

After his tenure at Ropes & Gray, he moved to the Portland, Maine, area and became the Litigation Department and Practice Management chair at one of Maine’s best firms, Perkins, Thompson, Hinckley & Keddy. In the years since, he has worked in a solo practice, as director of the Bar Harbor firm of Fenton, Chapman, Wheatley & Kane, and in an affiliation with the same firm, Fenton, Chapman & Kane

Building a Client-Focused Practice

Following the unexpected death of the last surviving partner of Fenton, Chapman in July of 2016 — Douglas B. Chapman — Mr. Wheatley has worked tirelessly to open his new practice, Wheatley Legal, P.C. Building on the traditions of Ropes & Gray and Perkins, Thompson, he is creating a new firm that upholds the same values of delivering premier legal counseling and representation at a reasonable cost. At this new firm, we strive to provide clients with the highest quality advice on their legal and business needs, as well as the highest quality representation in court.
